You Can Make a Difference: Crafted in Kindness at The Hawk Makerspace

The Challenge: Winter Needs Your Warm Handmade Hug
The winter season is widely revered as a time of holidays and celebrations, but for some, it can be one of the toughest times of the year. After the last leaves fall, freezing temperatures creep in and impact vulnerable community members. Our team at The Hawk Makerspace wants to work with YOU to make a difference through our Crafted in Kindness challenge.
We're inviting you to give the ultimate creative gift—your time, your passion, and your skills—to craft handmade hats, mittens, and gloves for our community's seniors in need. We're teaming up with the City of Farmington Hills Senior Division's amazing Adopt-a-Senior program to make sure every stitch is a sign of compassion. Ready to turn fabric and yarn into pure, unadulterated kindness? Read on!

Share a Skill or Learn a Skill and Lend a Hand
November 29th kicks off The Hawk Makerspace’s second annual Crafted in Kindness handmade hat and mitten drive! Simply drop off your handmade goods at The Hawk Makerspace (floor 2.5) between November 29th and December 20th. Whether sewn, knit, crocheted, felted, woven, etc – we’re happy to accept all methods of handmade hats, mittens, and/or gloves.
Don’t know how to make hats and mittens but still want to contribute? We can teach you!
On November 29th, we're hosting fun, hands-on sessions starting every hour between 12:30 PM and 4:30 PM. For a nominal fee ($45 Residents / $50 Non-Residents), you get all the materials and expert instruction needed to:
- Craft one fleece mitten and hat set to KEEP (Treat yourself!).
- Craft an additional set to DONATE (Spread the warmth!).
Register here or pop in that day.
For those wanting fleece fabric to independently sew sets, we’ll have precut fleece mitten and hat patterns available for purchase in The Hawk Makerspace between November 29th and December 20th. You’re also welcome to use your own warm fabric and materials as well!

It’s More Than Just Sewing: Join our Kindness Crew!
The best part of this challenge is the sense of community it creates. Don't let your specific craft limit you – we are happy to accept handmade sets of any kind! Fiber/textile artists, hobbyists, and anyone looking for creative company are welcome to bring their supplies and craft with us in The Hawk Makerspace during our regular hours of operation throughout the drive (November 29th–December 20th). No day passes required while making sets to donate - just bring your goodwill!

Last year, The Crafted in Kindness challenge inspired our very own Makerspace technician, Nick P., to learn something new. After prepping countless fleece cutouts for participants, he learned to sew to help make as many hat and mitten sets as he could. He says, “I really enjoyed the sense of community and camaraderie when everyone was sewing together. I look forward to beating my sewing record of hats and mittens from last year, and helping other people set records of their own this year.”
Join Nick! Let's see how many records we can break together!
